The challenges facing the City of Thunder Bay are not new. Taxes and other costs are going up and there hasn’t been an effort on Council to reduce the City’s expenses without cancelling some services. We cannot keep raising taxes in an effort to buy ourselves out of this dilemma. Sooner or later, the well will run dry.

It is a time to take a look at the basic structure of City Hall and where redundancies are appropriate, take the necessary action. Condoleezza Rice, the 66th US Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, earlier in career, took the Stanford University multimillion dollar budget, which had a $20 million deficit and eliminated that deficit and showed a $14.5 million surplus in two years. A few months ago Ms. Rice was on television stating that she didn’t know of any institution that could not cut their budget by 10% without affecting performance. I am of the same belief.

If I came into your household and asked you to cut 10% of your expenses, I’m sure you could without any severe consequences. I believe the City could do the same. The problems we now have were caused by man. The solution to our problems can be solved by man. In the end, it is incumbent upon us to solve our problems. Yours Truly, Orville Santa
